2008 Stiff Ride Info

2008 will mark the tenth year Team Stiff will sponsor the 3rd Annual Stiff Ride, (a.k.a. Ride With a Stiffy).  Although an official count was not taken due to extreme inebriation, last year's Stiff Ride witnessed the largest attendance yet with many RAGBRAI teams represented.  Some die-hard biker bums traveled from as far away as California, Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin especially for the nirvana-like experience that is Stiff Ride.

Is the Stiff Ride for you?  Take this simple quiz.

  1. Are you the type of RAGBRAI rider who has trouble getting into camp before dark?

  2. Have you sustained numerous cracked ribs from doing beer slides on RAGBRAI?

  3. Do you salivate for the taste of beer whenever you see a water tower on the horizon?

  4. Are there embarrassing pictures of you on multiple RAGBRAI web sites?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, the Stiff Ride is a must do for your 2008 ride calendar.  The Stiff Ride is renown for preparing one's liver and beer-legs just in time for RAGBRAI.  The June 2005 issue of Bicycling magazine selected the Stiff Ride as its 'Cool Ride of the Month'.  If you can do only one ride in 2008, do RAGBRAI.  But if you can do two rides in 2008, then join us on the Stiff Ride.

Route Description

Leg 1:  The Stiff Ride will begin in the parking lot of the Dry Dock Sports Bar, located in Shueyville at 1162 Club Road.  Markers will be placed at intersections along the route indicating which way to turn.  The first rest stop along the route is Odie's Bar located in the charming village of Ely, (a 6.5 mile ride from Shueyville).  If you play hacky sack, join us in the hacky circle behind Odie's.

Leg 2:  After we devour all the beer and food at Odie's Bar we press on for 16 miles to Baxa's Sutliff Store & Tavern in the quaint, riverside hamlet of Sutliff.  Burgers, hotdogs and beer will be served throughout the day to all bikers.  The old Sutliff Bridge provides a great view where riders can relax, and watch the Cedar River flow beneath them.  Jumping into the river naked is not encouraged unless advance notice is given to other riders with cameras.

Leg 3:  The return trip back to Shueyville will be delightfully interrupted by a beer oasis.  Just look for the Team Stiff Bus along the roadside.  The mileage from Sutliff back to the Dry Dock Sports Bar is 14 miles.  A post-ride party will be held at the Dry Dock Sports Bar to conclude the day's events.  Click here to view how much fun the post-ride party can be, especially when lick-on tattoos are present.  Click MSWord or PDF to download the map/directions for the Stiff Ride route in the format you want.

Riders are encouraged to bring bike lights and blinking reflectors, as it has been the experience of many a rider to have too much fun to return to Shueyville before sundown.  Click here to view how you might look once you return to the Dry Dock Sports Bar at the end of the day.  As always, Team Stiff highly recommends you wear a bike helmet during the ride.

Directions to Shueyville

Shueyville is located at Exit 10 on Interstate 380 between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.  After exiting Interstate 380 using the Shueyville/Swisher exit, turn east onto NE 120th Street.  Drive approximately 1 mile, turn left/north onto Club Road/Main Street.  Drive one block, and turn into the Dry Dock Sports Bar & Grille parking lot on the right/east side of the street.

Camping

There is a grassy area next to the parking lot of the Dry Dock Sports Bar & Grille that can be used to pitch a tent.  So bring your tent and plan for a full day and night of biking and partying.  Sorry, but no showers are available.

Cost

No registration fees are required.  If you would like to let us know that you plan to ride with the Stiffies, you can complete the simple on-line registration form.  Pre-registration is not required, but it enables us to tell the bars how many people to expect the day of the ride.  Bring money to purchase your own food and beverages in the towns along the route.  A Stiff Ride souvenir patch will be available for purchase the day of the ride for the low, low price of $5.00 each.  Quantities will be limited.  To purchase a patch in advance of the Stiff Ride, contact dave.wedemeyer@usbank.com.
